Ljubljana, 12 October

A survey of values has shown that values in Slovenia are very similar to those of Germans and Scandinavians. "Our paradigms are the same as the dominant paradigms of European culture," according to the co-author of the book on the subject, Niko Tos.

The book "Values of Slovenians and Europeans" is based on an international study on the quality of life, attitude towards the civil society and welfare state, family, religion, politics, democracy and faith in the institutions in 80 countries.
The data for Slovenia was compared to 14 other European countries estimated to be most relevant for Slovenia in terms of its past and future. Slovenia proved to be the prototype of European average, according to the other co-author of the book, sociologist Veljko Rus.
According to this study, Slovenia does not belong among the former Yugoslavian countries or among the former post-socialist countries of Eastern Europe. Instead it is closer to the average of the 14 European states it was compared to, Rus said.
Tos added that in terms of its predominant values, Slovenia was part of the Central European pattern, where it has undergone the transition at the level of the expression of values more calmly and according to different principles than other countries of Eastern Europe.
