Ljubljana, 11 October

Finland's ability to adapt to modern global trends presents an interesting role model for Slovenia, Prime Minister Janez Jansa said after meeting Finland's President Tarja Halonen in Ljubljana on Tuesday.

Jansa especially stressed the efficiency of Finland's education system and its science sector. The agenda also included an assessment of bilateral relations between Slovenia and Finland, with Jansa calling for greater economic cooperation between the two countries.
Halonen also met Parliament Speaker France Cukjati as part of her three-day visit to Slovenia. The pair agreed that national parliaments should upgrade their role in the EU.
This would also help to reduce the level of skepticism among EU residents about the bloc, Cukjati and Halonen agreed.
The Slovenian and Finnish officials also discussed the role of the European Parliament and the need to ensure equal representation of women in politics.
Despite quotas on representation of women, "this issue cannot be solved quickly and solely by changing legislation," Cukjati said. According to him, such issues require time.
