Tapio Wirkkala Exhibition Opens at Architecture Museum
An exhibition of works by Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala, who is considered as the father of Finnish applied arts, opened at the Ljubljana Architecture Museum on Tuesday.
Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was "the most Finnish, yet at the same time the most international designer of his time in Finland," director of the Helsinki Design Museum Marianne Aav said.
The travelling exhibition, which was first put up in Helsinki in 2000, includes Wirkkala's designs as well as hints to his design process and way of thinking, so it features sketches, drawings and objects from nature that inspired him.
Peter Krecic, the director of the Architecture Museum, noted that Finland learned early on that good design can be a good passport for a small country, a lesson he said that Slovenia could take to heart as well.
The exhibition, which coincides with the Scandinavian year of design, will be on display for a month. It will be accompanied by several lectures and other fringe events.
