Slovenia Answers Croatian Arbitration Proposal

Ljubljana, 11 October

Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel replied to the proposal for arbitration sent last week by Croatian FM Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic by saying that arbitration can only be carried out if there is complete mutual trust.

Yet this cannot be achieved if the two sides do not respect what has been agreed, he said in a letter released by the Foreign Ministry on Monday, 10 October. Grabar Kitarovic was quoted on Tuesday, 11 October, as labelling the letter "old news". Meanwhile, Rupel insisted on Tuesday that he did not reject the possibility for arbitration in Monday's letter to Croatian FM Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic. The letter "is not about the rejection of arbitration, but the request that Croatia meet certain conditions," Rupel said on Tuesday. On Friday, 14 October, President Janez Drnovsek weighed in with his opinion, saying it would be better if Slovenia and Croatia opt for arbitration on their border as there is very little possibility that the two countries could reach an agreement in talks.
