The major European network of arts festivals has selected the managing and artistic director of the Ljubljana Festival Darko Brlek its new president for a four-year term.
Ljubljana Festival has been a member of the European Festivals Association (EFA) since 1977, the spokesperson of the Ljubljana Festival Janja Rozman said on Monday.
The EFA annual general assembly which elected Brlek was held in Brno, the Czech Republic, from 7 to 9 October, marking the Brno international music festival's 40th anniversary.
Brlek being elected the EFA president is great recognition for the Ljubljana Festival and secures Slovenia a place in the European cultural milieu, Rozman added.
The association also got two new vice-presidents, the head of the Flanders Festival Jan Briers from Brussels, Belgium, and the head of the Rheingau festival Michael Herrmann from Wiesbaden, Germany.
The EFA, based in Belgium's Gent, comprises over 90 festivals, 13 national festival associations and four European networks from 35 countries. Its next general assembly is scheduled for June 2006 in Luxembourg.
