Under a reform of the health care sector, five doctors from Slovenia's leading hospital were awarded a state license to go private as of November, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
The new concessionaires include four outpatient doctors and a thoracic surgeon who are now employed by the Klinicni center Ljubljana.
The surgeon, Marko Bitenc, will still be bound to carry out 20% of his work for the Klinicni center.
The experience from this pilot project will be invaluable in granting possible future licenses, Health Minister Andrej Brucan said. He added that this might lead to shorter waiting lines.
Should a private doctor be hired by a hospital, the institution will merely pay the fees. However, should concessionaries bring their own patient and equipment, they would have to cover all the expenses and also take care of all possible complications. The Klinicni center hospital has not yet made any calculations on how much it would charge for letting an operating room.
