Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel has not excluded the option that Slovenia might carry out activities towards a referendum on Croatia's EU membership if "Croatia continues with the negative politics towards Slovenia."
Rupel, thus reiterated the statement of PM Janez Jansa, who said that public opinion will play a crucial role in the final decision on Croatia's EU entry.
Croatian politicians should realise that any national parliament in the EU could fail to ratify the accession treaty for Croatia, similarly to how Croatia failed to ratify the Slovenian-Croatia border agreement reached in mid-2001 by the then prime ministers, Jansa said.
After examining the proposal, the ministry will decide on what steps to take, but as of yet no meeting is planned between Slovenian FM Dimitrij Rupel and his Croatian counterpart Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.
Rupel said already on Tuesday that the proposal was unacceptable. According to Rupel, the subject of a possible arbitration should be the entire border between the two countries rather than just its maritime part.
Rupel explained to the public broadcaster TV Slovenija that Slovenia had no reason to fear arbitration. Moreover, Slovenia has been getting ready for it for some time and has compiled many relevant documents, according to the FM.
