The EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities Vladimir Spidla told the STA on Friday that he thinks workers from the new EU member states do not present a threat to the labour markets of old members.
Speaking at the launch of the 18th International Congress of the European Federation of Older Persons (EURAG), taking place in Ljubljana, Spidla said that some old EU member countries will probably remove their restrictions to free movement of labour in 2006.
He added that, in his opinion, there is no danger of mass westward migration of the workforce.
The European Commission will prepare a report on labour force movement in the EU by January 2006. He believes that some, but not all, old EU members might remove the restrictions after the publication of the report.
Two years after EU enlargement, in 2006, these countries can extend the moratorium by three years, and later by two more, that is until 2011. The transition periods were introduced by 12 members of the EU 15; that is all but Ireland, the UK and Sweden.
