An exhibition to mark the 400th anniversary of the first edition of Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes opened on Thursday at the Ljubljana-based National and University Library.
A selection of several different editions, as well as illustrations by Nikolaj Pirnat and Joze Ciuha are to be displayed until 22 October.
The exhibition, designed by Veselin Miskovic, features Slovenian and Spanish editions of Don Quixote kept by NUK, the first Slovenian edition from 1890 and those with relevant accompanying texts.
Furthermore, it showcases Croatian and Serbian translations from the period between both World Wars, pointing to the introduction of Cervantes to the wider south Slavic area. NUK also managed to obtain a 1608 edition of Cervantes's novel.
Reproductions of illustrations by Nikolaj Pirnat, which accompanied the translation by Stanko Leben, published by Slovenska matica in 1935, will be displayed along with a series of motives by painter Joze Ciuha on the subject.
