Rupel Upbeat about Outlook for Start of Turkey Talks
Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel is upbeat about the prospect that membership talks with Turkey will start as planned. "I believe the Turkish story will have a successful ending," Rupel said on the margins of a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
Speaking in Luxembourg on Monday, Rupel said that the British EU presidency has drafted a new negotiating framework for Turkey, with amended provisions on the EU's absorption capabilities.
There is also a new compromise in the provisions which state that Turkey will not prevent the EU membership of EU countries, including Cyprus, in international organisations.
According to Rupel, there was a problem associated with the potential membership of Cyprus in NATO or its Partnership for Peace programme.
However there are no changes to the common objective of the talks. "The wording remains like it was, which makes sense," the foreign minister stressed.
