The European Investment Bank (EIB) has granted a loan of EUR 250m to Slovenia for the construction of a key motorway section in the northeast of the country.
The loan was granted for the construction of the 36 km stretch of motorway between Maribor, Slovenia's second largest city, and Vucja vas, the EIB said on its website.
The stretch, whose total value is estimated at EUR 375m, represents half of the Maribor-Pince motorway that is part of the 5th pan-European route. The route connects Ljubljana and Budapest.
The EIB said that there has been a great rise in traffic between Maribor and the Hungarian border since the two countries entered the EU in May 2004.
According to the EIB, the bank has lent Slovenia more than EUR 1.15bn for motorway construction since 1990.
