A total of 89% of Slovenians speak at least one foreign language, according to the latest Eurobarometer survey, released in Brussels on Friday.
Languages of the neighbouring countries are the most favoured by the Slovenians (61%), followed by English, which is spoken by 56% of the Slovenians surveyed.
This is considerably more than the European average, which is 50%. The most popular foreign language in the EU is English, spoken by 34% of Europeans.
Generally, smaller countries fared better regarding foreign language knowledge. Topping the list is Luxembourg, where 99% of people speak a foreign language, while from the bottom up, only 29% of Hungarians and 30% of UK residents can converse with strangers in their native tongues.
The poll, conducted between 9 May and 14 June, surveyed 29,328 people in 25 EU countries and in four non-member states.
The survey also shows that 52% of women speak a foreign language, compared to 47% of men, and that the young and the people in cities fare better than the elderly and those living in the countryside.
