Ceremony Marks 30 Years of University of Maribor

Maribor, 20 September

Over 400 guests, among them politicians, professors and members of the diplomatic corps, gathered in Maribor on Tuesday to mark the 30th anniversary of the University of Maribor, the second largest university in the country.

President Janez Drnovsek was also in attendance, saying in a short address that the university has always been an open institution following the requirements of the time. This is a guarantee for its successful future, he said.
Chancellor Ivan Rozman stressed that the university is a regionally-oriented yet European institution. "The university has been blossoming, and has added three new faculties in the recent years," he noted.
The ceremony was the culmination of jubilee celebrations, and was preceded by the opening of two new student dormitories with a total of 253 beds, an investment valued at SIT 3bn (EUR 12.5m).
Moreover, later this year the Faculty of Electric Engineering and Computer Sciences will get a new annex with 16 lecture halls and laboratories, comprising a total of 10,000 sq. metres of new premises.
Earlier this year, the Faculty of Law, which celebrated its 45th anniversary, got new lecture halls and classrooms.
Celebrations will continue for a few weeks to come, mainly in the form of international seminars hosted by individual faculties. Meanwhile, students will celebrate in their own way - with a big traditional rock concert on 3 October.
The 12 faculties that make up the University of Maribor had 24,000 students in the 2004/2005 academic year and 4,000 employees. About 56,000 people have graduated from the university in the past three decades.
