Cvitkovic Bags New Director Award in San Sebastian

San Sebastian, 24 September

Slovenian director Jan Cvitkovic has won the Best New Director prize at the San Sebastian Film Festival for his film "Gravehopping".

The Altadis award for the best first or second feature film will bring 90,000 euros to the talented Slovenian filmmaker, the producer Staragara said.
The seven-member jury praised Cvitkovic's "intelligent combination of comedy and drama through characters that constantly surprise us in a film full of vitality".
Set in a small village, "Gravehopping", Cvitkovic's second feature film, is a comedy about a funeral speech writer. With humour peculiar to him, Cvitkovic portrays an unlikely bunch, including a man who refuses to speak and one who continuously tries to commit suicide.
The film premiered at the San Sebastian festival, while its premiere in Slovenia is not scheduled until late October.
Produced by Staregara, the film was written and directed by Cvitkovic. It features Gregor Bakovic, Natasa Matjasec, Sonja Savic, Mojca Fatur and Primoz Petkovsek, among others.
Cvitkovic is best known for winning the Lion of the Future at the 2001 Venice Film Festival for his debut feature "Kruh in mleko" (Bread and Milk).
