Deputy Groups Agree Govt to Set Number of Regions

Ljubljana, 22 September

Heads of deputy groups threw their support behind a proposal that the government be allowed to set the number of cohesion regions in line with a bill on balanced regional development.

"This would allow Slovenia to select the best option when the time comes to set the number of regions in talks on the EU's financial perspective and cohesion regions," PM Janez Jansa said following his meeting with heads of deputy groups on Thursday. The agreement among parties comes after the parliamentary committee for local government and regional policy endorsed last week the bill on balanced regional development which envisages the creation of cohesion regions. At that session, the MPs also added an amendment allowing the government to set the actual number of regions in a subsequent executive regulation. Moreover, Jansa said the participants of today's meeting also agreed to work together to find a mutually-agreeable solution for constitutional changes related to regionalisation before they are put on the agenda of the parliamentary commission for the Constitution. He said this was a very constructive and important agreement.
