Slovenian Aid for Katrina Victims on Its Way to the US

Slovenia's humanitarian aid for the victims of hurricane Katrina is on its way to the US. The SIT 21.7m (US$ 120,000) worth of cots, mattresses, blankets and first-aid kits was seen off by the Defence Minister Karl Erjavec and US Ambassador Thomas B. Robertson on Friday.

In a short statement at Brnik Airport, Erjavec said that the aid was humanitarian and not political. Robertson meanwhile thanked Slovenia, and stressed that the aid began its journey on the day that was declared a day of prayers for the victims of the hurricane that struck the US two weeks ago.
The airplane to transport the aid, NATO's C-130 Hercules, took off with half of the aid and flew to Germany. The plane is expected to return later in the day to collect the remainder of the shipment.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has thanked Slovenia for the aid it has offered to help the relief effort after the devastating hurricane Katrina. Rice thanked for the material aid, as well as the stated readiness of Slovenian NGOs to join the relief effort, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.
Slovenia sent SIT 23m (US$ 120,000) worth of aid to the United States, comprising cots, temporary shelters and first aid kits.
