PM Jansa Defends Act on RTV Slovenija, Calls for Yes Vote

Ljubljana, 19 September

Prime Minister Janez Jansa has come out to defend the government-sponsored act on public broadcaster RTV Slovenija, calling on voters to endorse it when they go to the polls for the 25 September referendum.

Speaking to the press in Ljubljana on Monday, Jansa said that the main reason for the adoption of the new act is the current state at the public broadcaster, which is not good. The institution is poorly organised and inefficient, he said, but this has more to do with the system than the current leadership.
Jansa said that the adoption of the new act has also been prompted by certain "outrageous procedures of politisation," at the public broadcaster.
According to Jansa, the government coalition has won the mandate for changes to the RTV Slovenija act at the elections: the coalition announced these changes before the elections, and they are featured in the coalition agreement.
The new act moreover sets significantly higher criteria and "prevents covert politisation through the so-called civil society," Jansa said.
Furthermore, the new act corrects the "illogical" provision that candidates for the RTV Slovenija council can only be nominated by certain organisations and associations, as all citizens will be allowed to nominate their candidates.
According to Jansa, the act is also necessary if Slovenia is to be comparable to Europe in this field. We need a more dynamic and future-oriented public broadcaster, he said.
Jansa invited voters to go to the polls on Sunday and vote in favour of the new RTV Slovenija act.
