Slovenian Officials to Attend UN Summit
Slovenian President Janez Drnovsek is to be among more than 170 heads of state from around the world taking part in the UN General Assembly that will get underway on Wednesday in New York.
Apart from Drnovsek, Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, the acting OSCE chairman, is also scheduled to attend the event that will focus on the implementation of the Millennium Declaration and UN reforms.
Drnovsek left for the US on Sunday and will launch the official part of his visit to New York on Tuesday, when he is scheduled to meet counterparts from around the world for talks dedicated to promoting peaceful dialogue. He is due to address the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
At a press conference held in Ljubljana before he left for the US, Drnovsek voiced discontent with the performance of the United Nations. "We have to ask ourselves whether we can be happy with the state of humankind and the efficiency of the UN. My answer to both questions is no," he said on Friday.
The president also said that the reform of the organisation, which will be debated and possibly agreed at the summit, is crucial because it would provide equal representation, in particular on the Security Council.
Meanwhile, Rupel's stay in New York is to focus on OSCE-related topics. Among other things, he is to take part in a meeting of EU foreign ministers and the Human Security Network, and attend a reception hosted by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. He is due to speak at the plenary of the UN General Assembly on Monday, 19 September.
