Ljubljana, 2 September

A new translation of Goethe's Faust into Slovenian was presented in Ljubljana on Thursday. The poetic drama in five acts by German poet, novelist and playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was translated by acclaimed translator Janko Moder and published by publisher Sanje.

The complete translation of one of the masterpieces of German and world literature includes Proto-Faust, Faust - Dedications, Faust I and Faust II, as well as the translator's epilogue and notes.
At the presentation, Moder said he started translating Faust as early as during the Second World War.
A translator, editor and publicist, the 90 year-old Moder is the first among many Slovenian Faust translators to finish the work in its entirety. He has worked on the translation during almost all of his career.
Moder worked as a professor at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, he was stage manager and language adviser at numerous Slovenian theatres and editor of Cankarjeva zalozba publishing house, among many things. After 1954, he started working as a freelance translator.
Moder, also the co-founder of the Slovenian Association of Literary Translators (DSKP), translates from 20 European languages, mostly theatre plays and prose classics. With an impressive oeuvre of 400 translations, he received a number of national and international awards.
The new translation, a major project of the DSKP and the Sanje publisher, marks three anniversaries: the 255th anniversary of Goethe's birth, 140 years of the first Slovenian translation of Faust I and last year's 90th birthday of Janko Moder.
