A documentary about Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek, who has variously been described as an "academic rock star", "Elvis of cultural theory" and human encyclopaedia, is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September.
The feature-length "Zizek!" by director Astra Taylor follows the philosopher to Rio de Janeiro, Boston and New York, where he "orates to overcapacity crowds on his favourite themes: ideology, psychoanalysis, religion and love," according to the festival website.
The cameras also follow him to his Ljubljana apartment where, "amid kitchen cupboards stuffed with socks, underwear and bed sheets, the professor speaks about the magnificence and modesty of philosophy. While lying in bed topless, the philosopher declares that he does not solve problems, he redefines them."
"Zizek!" will be only one of the premieres at the Toronto film festival, which will be underway between 8 and 17 September. Indeed, most of the 335 screenings will be premieres.
