Ljubljana Golfers to Get a Course at Their Doorstep
The capital of Slovenia will get its first golf course on the nearby Barje marshlands. The five hectares training course and the eleven hectares nine-hole course will open for public at the beginning of 2007.
The course will be built on the closed part of the non-toxic landfill managed by the Snaga public utility. The zoning act, in place for the area, allows building sports and recreational facilities. The project enjoys the support of the local community and the Ljubljana municipality.
The proposed golf course is expected to have a beneficial impact on the environment of the surrounding area as the investing Tonic company will need to prevent water oozing and reduce the amount of unpleasant smells.
According to Snaga officials, the utility decided to lease the land to cover its investment expenses. They say the course will be financed exclusively by private funds.
