Polish street theatre company Teatr Porywacze Cial opened what has become one of the most popular summer festivals in Ljubljana last Wednesday. While the show "Funny Faces" will take place in Preseren Square, all other Trnfest events will be held at KUD France Preseren, an independent cultural centre at Trnovo.
Until the end of August, the 14th annual Trnfest festival will feature more than 100 music, theatre and dance shows, film projections and exhibitions. The organizers promise a diverse programme featuring local and foreign artists and performers.
What makes Trnfest so popular is the fact that all the events are free of charge. The easy-going atmosphere adds to the appeal of what is essentially a social event. Most of the locals who are not out of town for holidays turn up here for a drink and entertainment.
Apart from the concerts and performances held on the open-air stage daily at 9 PM, deejay nights will take place at the KUD France Preseren hall at 10:30 PM daily except Sunday. In the event of rain, the concerts will be held indoors.
Music lovers may look forward to concerts by Dhoad Gypsies from Rajahstan, India, Italian-Croatian ensemble East Rodeo and US musicians Woven Hand and No Use for a Name. Among the local musicians to preform at Trnfest are Jani Kovacic and his band Sextettz, N'Toko, Hic et Nunc and Elektrostars.
A special programme for children will feature workshops, concerts and performances by theatre and circus companies. Moreover, the street festival Emona Promenade, to be held as part of Trnfest between 26 and and 30 August, will also offer entertainment for children and adults.
The Trnovo Bridge and Emona Street leading off it will be occupied by performers from 14 countries, appearing in more than 30 events, most of them requiring the audience to take part.
