Into Croatia via the New International Border Crossing
Print this page

It is now possible to travel to Croatia via the new Podgorje-Jelovice road border crossing. This border crossing will be open to international traffic and at the height of the tourist season will perhaps help ease transport links with our southern neighbours.

The Podgorje international border crossing was originally reserved for passenger traffic between Slovenia and Croatia, but later the foreign ministers of the two countries agreed to turn it into a border crossing for international passenger traffic. This is because Slovenia has become a full member of the European Union, and restricting the use of the border crossing to traffic from Slovenia and Croatia would discriminate against other citizens of the EU, the European Economic Area and Switzerland.

The Podgorje border crossing, which falls under the jurisdiction of the border police station at Sočerga, will be able to be used by all citizens of third countries who enjoy freedom of movement and all those who do not require a visa to enter Slovenia. Those foreign nationals who require a visa will need to obtain one in advance at Slovenia’s diplomatic/consular missions abroad, since visas will not be issued at the Podgorje border crossing. The border crossing will be open from 6:00 am to 12:00 am (midnight) from 1 June to 31 August and from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm from 1 September to 31 May.
