The Slovenian National Theatre's Summer of Opera and Ballet at Cankarjev Dom
Print this page

This summer from 13 to 22 July 2005 the Cankarjev Dom cultural and congress centre will play host to the Slovenian National Theatre's SUMMER OF OPERA AND BALLET. The Ljubljana Opera and Ballet will be performing Verdi's world famous operas La Traviata and Il Trovatore in the Gallus concert hall, as well as Die Rheinnixen by Offenbach, which had its world premiere in Ljubljana this spring, and Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake.

The tragic role of La Traviata's Violetta will be taken in this production by the Slovakian soprano Adriana Kohutkova, whose Armgard in the international cast of Die Rheinnixen was very warmly received. The excellent company of the Ljubljana opera will be joined for Verdi's Il Trovatore by internationally renowned tenor Janez Lotrič and the excellent Russian mezzo-soprano Elena Manistina, winner of prizes at the highest international level, who has performed on the stages of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Paris Opera, and the Bolshoi Theatre. In addition to these operatic greats, the Gallus stage will present the story of the white and black swan with the third production of Swan Lake in its history, which will be danced by the first lady of the Ljubljana Ballet, Regina Križaj Babačić, with a special guest as the prince, Cesar Morales, who is the first soloist with the English National Ballet and winner of prestigious international awards (gold medals in Prague and New York).

Offenbach's Die Rheinnixen is another high class musical performance, and will close the SUMMER OF OPERA AND BALLET. The production, which has filled every seat of the Gallus hall in its thirteen performances to date, has become an international hit thanks in part to the exceptional soloists of the Ljubljana Opera, soprano Martina Zadro and the baritone Jože Vidic.
