Ljubljana, 11 July

Dr Rupel, the Slovenian foreign minister and president-in-office of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) issued a statement to mark the tenth anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre that honoured the victims of the tragic event.

"The tragedy that occurred in Srebrenica ten years ago remains a painful memory, not only for the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but for the entire world," said Dr Rupel, and on behalf of the OSCE expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

"We must continue to remember the victims of Srebrenica. Their families must be offered support in efforts to rebuild their lives and find some level of satisfaction. The OSCE remains committed to its relationship with these people," said Dr Rupel who on Monday 11 July 2005 participated in the ceremony held at the memorial centre in Potočare, Bosnia to honour the memory of the victims of the Srebrenica massacre. He said that the OSCE would continue to work towards reconciliation, offering assistance in the implementation of ownership legislation in Bosnia, work in the field of human rights, and monitoring court cases on war crimes in cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). He also said that those responsible for the tragedy must stand trial.

"Ten years have passed since the tragedy. Our anger against the perpetrators remains. We have the shared obligation to heal wounds and ensure that such acts can never happen again," said Dr Rupel.
