Ljubljana, 7 July

The regional consultation for the UN study on violence against children held in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, came to a conclusion on Thursday 7 July with the adoption of the Ljubljana Conclusions.

The consultation was entitled "Stop Violence against Children - Act Now!" As the Slovenian foreign minister Dr Dimitrij Rupel said it is a document that expresses the desire of statesmen, international organisations, non-governmental organisations, experts, children's ombudsmen, and children that everyone should do everything in their power to eradicate violence against children.

The document adopted has nine points, and consultation participants agreed to develop and implement strategies to prevent violence against children in all areas. They approved the necessary legislative measures that will give great political significance to the prevention of violence against children and the development of public awareness campaigns, and strengthen capabilities in all areas to detect violence and to assist child victims of violence.

The main session of the conference "Yokohama Review - Combating Sexual Exploitation of Children" held in Ljubljana on Friday 8 July discussed new realities in combating this problem. As the Head of the Council of Europe's Crime Problems Department, Margaret Killerby said, there is a need to ensure that the police and courts can work effectively to offer assistance to victims. She also spoke about the Cybercrime Convention, an important international document that entered into force last year
