Ljubljana, 1 July

The Government has appointed Jože Romšek from the Ministry of Transport as the new Director General of the Police.

He was put forward as a candidate by the Minister for the Interior, Dragutin Mate. He officially assumed the position on 1 July 2005, taking over from the acting Director General, Bojan Potočnik, who will retire in August. The post is for five-years with the possibility of being reappointed. The new Director General's priorities will include improving road safety, and he will also work on ensuring people in Slovenia can live in safety, and improving the Police's results in preventing crime. Mr Romšek said that Slovenia had another important task to look forward to as an EU member state, as from 2007 the border with Croatia would be the external Schengen border, which will bring a large number of new financial, personnel and organisational work with it.

Mr Romšek, born in 1954, is a lawyer by profession, and most recently held the post of Senior Secretary in the Office of the Minister for Transport. He is the recipient of a number of awards from the time of Slovenia's independence, and holds the rank of lieutenant in Slovenia's armed forces reserves.
