The ministerial term of the Prime Minister, Janez Janša, has visited the Savinjsko-Šaleška region as part of a series of visits to different Slovenian regions intended to contribute to the polycentric development and decentralisation of the country.
After meeting numerous figures from political, economic and social life in the region, Mr Janša said the most important issue in the region was its poor infrastructure, as could be seen in the lack of railway lines and the poor roads. He expressed his exception that improving infrastructure would significantly speed up development in the region. The Prime Minister went on to say that the region had significant development potential, as well as a number of other developmental problems.
Mr Janša said that small and medium-sized enterprises that gave greater emphasis to innovation, research and development represented an important element of the region's development, and that at present the proportion of such companies in the Savinjsko-Šaleška region's economy l lagged behind the national average.
The day before this tour Mr Janša and the Ministry of the Economy, Andrej Vizjak, visited the Velenje-based company Gorenje. As Mr Janša emphasised, Gorenje could be a model to other companies due to its success on demanding markets. The Prime Minister said, "The fact that the Government wants to make some changes makes Gorenje even more important because it places an emphasis on areas that are vital to more rapid development, such as innovation, reasoned risk and timely planning."
