Slovenia and Hungary Enjoy Positive, Problem Free Relations
The Hungarian foreign minister, Mr Ferenc Somogyi, has paid an official visit to Slovenia, at the invitation of Dr Rupel, the Slovenian foreign minister.
The two ministers came to the conclusion that their countries enjoyed positive relations with no problem areas, and that there was ongoing dialogue between them at the political and expert levels. Dr Rupel said that the two countries had considerable opportunities to deepen economic cooperation, and that it was in Slovenia's interest to increase trade and reduce its foreign trade deficit. Slovenia is working to develop greater economic cooperation and to improve the economic situation of their neighbouring regions, both of which include minority communities of the respective neighbouring nation. Care for the minority communities is an important part of relations between Slovenia and Hungary. The two foreign ministers agreed that both communities had amenable advocates to represent them, despite a number of unresolved issues. Slovenia would like the Slovenian minority in Hungary to have more benefits, particularly in minority media projects and education projects.
Mr Ferenc Somogyi was also received by the Prime Minister, Janez Janša. The two shared their views on current events within the European Union, agreeing that there should be no let up in efforts to reach consensus on the next financial perspective. They also expressed a shared conviction that the EU must continue with a clear open-door policy towards the countries of South-Eastern Europe, and emphasised the positive role played by Slovenian and Hungarian partnerships with other countries in that region.
