Ljubljana, 28 June

Over 150 representatives from 27 countries attended the international conference of the Nato-Russia Council to discuss terrorism and to determine ways to strengthen cooperation to prevent terrorist acts and their consequences.

Dimitrij Rupel, Slovenia's foreign minister, said that terrorism was on the top of Slovenia's agenda. He added that it was a threat that does not respect borders, which demanded coordinated action in the fight against terrorism. Dr Rupel went on to say that Slovenia utterly condemned terrorism, for which there could be no justification, and that no objective, however legitimate could be used to justify terrorist activities.

Conference participants also heard an address given by John Rose, Director of the George C. Marshall European Centre for Security Studies. He said that the conference was an opportunity to exchange information on recent terrorist acts around the globe, such as those in Spain, Turkey, Russia and the United States. The conference continued with meetings of working groups, where participants looked at studies on how Turkey and United States were fighting terrorism.
