Slovenia and two other EU member states, Cyprus and Slovakia, became members of the European University Institute (EUI), a post-graduate studies institution based near Florence. The EUI specialises in legal, economic and political studies from the aspect of European integration.
To accept three new members was a unanimous decision that the high council of the EUI made at its session on Friday. The high council comprises government delegations from EU member states which are also EUI members.
European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism Jan Figel presented educational and scientific goals at the session and stressed the importance of institutions such as the EUI for the future of post-graduate education.
The EUI connects scientists from Europe's leading universities and top researchers in European history, law, business, political sciences and humanities. Its advantage is that it is an international institution uniting all EU citizens, which provides a wider perspective and a distance towards the national aspects of European issues.
With EUI membership, EU citizens are given an opportunity for post-graduate studies, post-PhD education and employment for university lecturers. Three Slovenian students are currently on post-PhD research at the EUI.
