Trieste, 8 June

Slovenian poet, translator and academician Ciril Zlobec is this year's winner of the Fulvio Tomizza Award, given out by the Lions Club Trieste Europa for promoting the ideals of understanding and peaceful coexistence among the people living along the national border.

The award is named after Tomizza (1935-1999), the Italian writer who was born in the Croatian part of the Istrian peninsula, studied in Koper and lived in Trieste. The award has been conferred since last year.
Zlobec, who was a personal friend of Tomizza's, is to receive the award in Trieste on 25 June, the incumbent and former presidents of the Lions Club Trieste Europa, Bojan Brezigar and Vittorio Picoli, told a press conference on Tuesday in Trieste.
The initiators of the award stressed Zlobec's role in bringing together Italian and Slovenian culture and the two languages by translating Italian poetry and publishing texts in the Italian language.
Zlobec has received several merits for his work, and has recently been decorated by Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.
