The Ministry for Higher Education, Science and Technology Jure Zupan has presented a set of measures with which it hopes to make Slovenia one of the leading European countries in terms of the IT society.
Speaking at Wednesday's press conference in Ljubljana, Zupan said the key tasks include equipping education and research centres with information technology.
"The goals are to introduce long-distance study, new technologies and applications, and promote the development of domestic applications," he said.
We hope the measures will take Slovenia into the top half of Europe in terms of the development of the IT society, he said.
Zupan pointed out that the information society is an important aspect of the Lisbon Strategy. A person skilled in IT can better manage his work, he added.
One of the measures that the ministry is taking is the establishment of a Directorate for the Information Society, he said.
According to the acting head of the directorate Joze Zrimsek, the directorate's top objective is to reduce the digital divide in Slovenia.
The measures planned by the directorate include providing IT training to unemployed persons, establishing public Internet points and the promotion of broadband technologies, Zrimsek said.
Statistics show that around half of Slovenian households own a computer, while 45% of households have an Internet connection.
