The Slovenian Association of Journalists conferred annual awards on Thursday, with the life achievement award going to retired international affairs commentator Jurij Gustincic.
As the jury argued its choice, the 84-year old Gustincic has proven to be one of the country's most credible and popular commentators of international affairs over the years.
He spent over two decades abroad, notably in London, Prague and New York, working as a foreign affairs correspondent for a number of former Yugoslav media houses and the national broadcaster RTV Slovenija.
Dubbed by Washington Post in 1974 as the "star of Yugoslav journalism" Gustincic gained praise for his reports about the "Prague Spring", the Watergate scandal, and Slovenia's independence war.
The association conferred the "Consortium Veritatis" ("Brotherhood of Truth") awards for 2004 to Barbara Surk, the Middle East correspondent for the daily Delo, and two Radio Slovenija reporters, Mirko Stular and Miran Korosec.
The weekly Mladina journalist Ksenja Hahonina and Delo journalist Primoz Cirman were named the best up-and-coming journalists, while Matej Povse from the daily Dnevnik was awarded for the best picture story of the year.
The association also marked its 100th anniversary at today's awards ceremony. Established in 1905 by journalist and writer Fran Govekar, it is now a full member of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
