Ljubljana, 17 May

Audiences in Ljubljana will be able to see a total of 62 concerts, opera, ballet and other performances as the Ljubljana Summer Festival takes place between 4 July and 18 August.

The 53rd festival in a row will be opened by the famous Russian Bolshoi Theatre with the opera "The Fiery Angel" by Sergei Prokofiev, and close with "Zorba the Greek" by Mikis Theodorakis, performed by the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor.
The summer stages will also host renowned Argentine tenor Marcelo Alvarez, Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, Russian violinist Vadim Repin and Austrian pianist Rudolf Buchbinder, the organiser Festival Ljubljana told a press conference on Tuesday.
This season the organisers are once again cooperating with world music promoter Brane Roncel to organise concerts by David Calzado from Cuba, the Afro-Cuban performers Conga Kings and the vocal jazz group Manhattan Transfer.
Between 20 and 23 June, the jubilee 20th Slovenian Musical Days will take place in the framework of the festival, consisting of concerts, an international musicological symposium and other round tables.
Other events at this year's festival include performances held as part of "Days of Chanson", concerts by Slovenian world music performers Terra folk, Sukar and Vlado Kreslin, and the annual Slovenian Pop Song competition.
Accompanying the music events will be an open-air cinema at Ljubljana Castle, dubbed "Cinema Under the Stars", and a number of exhibitions.
Most of the performances will take place on the open stage at Krizanke.
This year the organisers hope for good weather since they could not reach an agreement with the arts centre Cankarjev on staging shows there in case of bad weather, Darko Brlek of Festival Ljubljana told the news conference.
