Dravske elektrarne Maribor, the manager of hydro plants on the Drava river, on Friday celebrated the end of comprehensive upgrade works which increased the capacity of 6 overhauled plants by a quarter.
We gained as much with the overhaul as we would with the construction of an entirely new power plant, the company's director Danilo Sef said upon the completion of the SIT 50bn (EUR 209m) project.
Speaking at the celebration held at the Ozbalt hydro plant, he said the positive effects of the project were crucial for the entire energy system, as the increase in capacity has improved the reliability of supply in the whole country.
His words were echoed by Economics Minister Andrej Vizjak, who said the project was a great achievement for the Slovenian economy and in line with the government's energy policy.
Started in 1987, the overhaul of six hydro plants on the upper part of the Drava river (Dravograd, Vuzenica, Vuhred, Ozbalt, Fala and Mariborski otok) was the biggest hydro energy upgrade even in the country.
The power plants on the Drava river (the six plus Zlatolicje and Formin further downstream) meet one quarter of the country's electric energy requirements with an annual output of 2.7bn kWh.
