Jansa Stays SDS Head, Erjavec New DeSUS President

Ljubljana, 19 May

Janez Jansa was unanimously elected president of the ruling Slovenian Democrats (SDS) for a fifth consecutive term.

In an address preceding his election at the party congress, the only candidate for the post said that the party will conduct a balanced centrist policy, seeking a balance between market and welfare state. The party also updated its programme at the congress, emphasising core values such as freedom, human dignity, justice, solidarity and patriotism, as well as rapid economic reforms. Karl Erjavec meanwhile became the new leader of the junior coalition Pensioners' Party (DeSUS). He got 113 of the 182 votes to beat out defence studies professor Anton Bebler and head of a local party branch Mirko Miklavcic, while outgoing party leader Anton Rous announced he would not be seeking reelection. Laying out his vision at the party congress, Erjavec promised to breathe fresh life into a party that almost failed to make into parliament in October's general election.
