The government adopted Thursday the amendments to the act on local elections which allow EU citizens to run at the local elections and introduce women quota.
In line with the amendments, all EU citizens will be given the right to stand for seats in municipal councils, while they can now only cast a vote at the polls. They will however not be allowed to run for mayors.
The rules would remain unchanged for other foreigners with permanent residence in Slovenia, as they will only have the right to vote and not stand in elections.
In order to secure equal opportunities for women, the proposed amendments suggest that at least 40% of candidates at the local elections should be women.
This stipulation is due to be introduced gradually though, with a 25% women quota to be observed at the local elections next year.
The amendments have already been sent to parliament to be discussed in a fast-track procedure.
