Editorial
Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, arrived in Slovenia Tuesday for a historic three-day state visit that celebrated the long and rich history of relations between the United Kingdom and Slovenia. President Danilo Tuerk started his official visit to Beijing on Friday by meeting his counterpart Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao. Their talks focused on economic and political as well as cultural relations between the two countries. Slovenia is the 15th most competitive economy in the European Union as measured by the EU's Lisbon criteria, according to a report released by the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Slovenia Ranks 30th on Press Freedom Index
Slovenia has dropped eight places to 30th on the World Press Freedom Index, which is published annually by the organisation Reporters without Borders, a Paris-based NGO. This year's ranking is the worst in the last five years. More »

Editorial
Twelve days after 21 September general election, the National Electoral Commission announced on Friday official results of the vote. The winner of the election is the Social Democrats (SD) with 29 seats in the 90-member legislative body, followed closely by the outgoing ruling Slovenian Democrats (SDS) with 28 seats. The third strongest party is Zares, which won 9 seats. Fourth came the Pensioners' Party (DeSUS), with 7 seats. The National Party (SNS) got five seats, as well as the alliance of the People's Party (SLS) and Youth Party (SMS), and the Liberal Democrats (LDS). The turnout stood at 63.1%. President Danilo Tuerk on Friday called the maiden session of the new sitting of the Slovenian National Assembly for 15 October.

Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader congratulated Borut Pahor whose Social Democrats (SD) won the Slovenian general election in a phone call Wednesday morning.
