Editorial
There was a new momentum in the Slovenian-Croatian dispute on the border, as an Austrian MEP proposed last week that the two countries settle for arbitration on the issue. This was coupled by calls from senior EU officials for the issue to be dealt with before Slovenia held the EU presidency in the first half of 2008. Slovenian officials responded by saying that the country does not oppose arbitration, but would agree to it only if the whole border rather than just the maritime border is considered. The view that arbitration was acceptable in this form was also voiced by the majority of Slovenian parties.
Meanwhile, PM Janez Jansa told a press conference in Brussels on Thursday, 8 March, that Croatia had so far not sent Slovenia any tangible plans for arbitration. Sanader meanwhile opened the door to the possibility for arbitration on the whole border, which Croatia had been rejecting until now.
