The government adopted a bill on the declaration of a protective ecological zone and continental shelf in the Adriatic. The bill defines Slovenia as a successor to the 1968 agreement between Italy and the former Yugoslavia, giving it the right to protect its own interests in the continental shelf by declaring an ecological zone. Maybe this is the way to resolve the dispute over the border. The Slovenian Government has adopted a proposal for the simplification of the visa procedure for short tourist visits to Slovenia. The relaxation of the visa regime relates to transactions with authorised travel agents for tourists coming to Slovenia for short visits and applies to citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Russia, Turkey and Serbia and Montenegro. Just a week before the government returns from the summer recess to do business as usual, the environment and foreign ministries announced they had drafted a bill under which Slovenia would declare an ecological zone and continental shelf in the Adriatic. Slovenian parties have voiced unanimous approval. Flash floods that hit eastern Slovenia on Sunday have caused huge damage, according to preliminary estimates. The government is expected to earmark a total of SIT 80m (EUR 0.33m) for services dealing with the consequences of flash flooding that ravaged through eastern Slovenia on Sunday. Slovenia is to declare a protective ecological zone and continental shelf in the Adriatic under a bill that the foreign and environment ministries have sent for government approval, the Environment Ministry said in Thursday's press release. The Government is already preparing for the EU Presidency in the first half of 2008. The Presidency of the EU in the first half of 2008 is a big challenge for Slovenia, which will become the first of the new Member States to assume this duty. Assuming the Presidency of the EU is an extremely demanding national project in terms of content, organisational structure and the allocation of financial resources, and one that requires the collaboration of a large number of state officials. For this reason, the Government began its preparations immediately after the Council of Ministers took its decision on the Slovenian Presidency. Erwan Fouere, the head of the European Commission Representation to Slovenia whose term in office ended on Monday after more than three years of service, believes that Slovenia will face tough challenges as an EU member in the future. Fouere, who officially assumed office in Slovenia in March 2002, had made it one of his priorities to inform the public about the EU. More than three years later the official says that a person can never do enough to keep the public informed.
