Ljubljana, 22 April

Outgoing British Ambassador Hugh Mortimer paid a farewell visit to President Janez Drnovsek and Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel on Friday. He estimated in the talks that Slovenia had made considerable progress over recent years.

According to a press release by the president's office, Mortimer said in the talks with Drnovsek that he was staying in Slovenia during what was a very interesting period for the country.
Slovenia has achieved a high level of stability, gained international recognition and enjoys esteem as an EU newcomer, Mortimer said as quoted by the president's office.
The pair also discussed EU matters, notably the adoption of the constitutional treaty, the next financial perspective, the role of the EU and Slovenia in the Western Balkans and Slovenia's presidency of the EU in 2008.
Mortimer and Foreign Minister Rupel also focused in their talks on the situation in the Western Balkans, and examined operations of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which Slovenia chairs this year.
As to the bilateral relations, Rupel estimated that they were very good and dynamic, for which the outgoing British ambassador can also be credited for, according to a press release by the Foreign Ministry.
Mortimer meanwhile praised Slovenia for making such big progress in a very short time and achieving the full-fledged membership of the EU and NATO, the press release states.
