The Slovenian Theatre Museum has published a photo-monograph on dancer and choreographer Janez Mejac, dubbed "Janez Mejac, Danseur Noble". The career and life of the acclaimed artist is presented through photos, the words of his peers Pino Mlakar, Marija Vogelnik, Andrej Inkret, Anka Cernic and Vojko Vidmar, and the artist himself.
Born in 1936, Mejac was a dancer, choreographer, teacher and director at the Ljubljana Ballet House, where he performed as dancer in 84 leading roles. He was also the choreographer of 18 ballet shows for TV.
While the Slovenian ballet legend Pino Mlakar labelled him "a noble dancer", ballet dancer Vojko Vidmar said that Mejak's enthusiasm helped bridge the gap between professional and amateur art, as he has always strived to bring the traditionally elitist ballet closer to the people.
Mejac, who has in recent years been a ballet trainer for swimmers and choreographer in drama theatre, focuses in his autobiographic contribution on previously concealed intimate moments in his careers. But he also highlights the problems of modern ballet.
The publication features extensive photo material accompanied by the articles, excerpts from reviews and awards that he won in his long career.
The book is accompanied by an exhibition which opens at the Theatre Museum in Ljubljana on 21 April.
