The parliament has confirmed Barbara Brezigar as the new state prosecutor general for a six-year term in office. Brezigar was appointed in a 44:25 vote which was split along party lines.
The coalition unanimously upheld her candidacy wheras the opposition voted against. Brezigar also won the votes of the two minority representatives, while the opposition National Party (SNS) abstained.
While the coalition voiced unanimous support for Brezigar, the opposition was particularly critical of her past political activities, fearing that they might translate into a politicised prosecution service. The coalition rejected such allegations. Meanwhile, SDS was convinced that Brezigar is capable of restoring the prosecution's tarnished reputation with her credentials and experience.
