Officials Welcome Selection of New Pope
Top Slovenian officials said they think the newly-elected Pope Benedict XVI would continue the work of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.
President Janez Drnovsek said he believes the Pope would continue to stress the importance of spirituality and spread the message of peace. PM Janez Jansa said he hopes that, with the election of German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as the new Pope, relations between Slovenia and the Holy See would continue to be good. Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament France Cukjati stressed the new Pope represents a "supplement to the previous Pope in his clear philosophical and theological principles". The selection of the new Pope was also greeted by Archbishop of Ljubljana Alojz Uran, who said Benedict XVI was a simple man who, like his predecessor, knows how to connect with people. Slovenian bishops expressed their devotion to the newly-elected Pope Benedict XVI and said they were hoping the new pontiff would visit Slovenia in the near future. The announcement that the Roman Catholic Church got a new Pope was also greeted by the heads of other religious communities in the country.
