Govt Adopts Zoning Act for Koper-Divaca Railway

Ljubljana, 14 April

The government adopted Thursday a zoning act for the construction of a second rail line between Divaca and Koper, in southwestern Slovenia. The investment is valued at SIT 168bn (EUR 700m).

As Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning Janez Podobnik told a news conference after the cabinet session, the act is only a first step in the project. After all the necessary documents are collected, a building permit is expected to be issued within a year.
The second line to the existing one-track Divaca-Koper railway is planned to be 27 kilometres long and will go through eight tunnels.
The Koper-Divaca-Ljubljana line is crucial for connecting the coastal region to the rest of Slovenia and Europe and will be an important boost to the Slovenian port of Koper.
The long-awaited project was already granted EUR 5.47m by the European Commission in January.
