Slovenia in Favour of R&D Programme, Says Minister

Luxembourg, 18 April

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Jure Zupan said that Slovenia is in favour of the framework programme for research and development for the period 2007-2013, which was presented to EU ministers by Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik on Monday.

As Zupan said after the ministerial meeting in Luxembourg, the programme is a solid basis for further debate, before its adoption, about priorities and goals that the EU wishes to follow in the Lisbon process.
According to the minister, Slovenia is in favour of the programme's proposal to double the funds for science and research since this would help considerably in boosting the European economic growth and competitive strength.
Slovenia is hopeful, Zupan added, that the new programme will be more flexible than the existing one and would be accessible to all, notably the small and medium-size companies and institutions that are now hindered by the red-tape.
This accessibility is especially important for the EU newcomers as well as small member states, since it would ensure their integration into the common European research area on an equal basis, according to the minister.
EU ministers, in charge of the competition, also approved at their meeting today a draft directive on fighting unfair competition.
