The government has confirmed the bill on public broadcaster RTV Slovenija, which will bring about major management and editorial changes. According to the bill, the director general would retain the powers for business decisions but also take over significant responsibilities for the programme.
He or she would be appointed by the programme council, which would take over the tasks of the current council of RTV Slovenija. While the programme council would have jurisdiction over content and thereby represent in particular the public, the supervisory board would be in charge of organisational issues and oversight so the government's role in it is more emphasised. Culture Minister Vasko Simoniti, whose ministry drafted the legislation, said that the bill ensures and preserves the independence and autonomy of journalists. He said he met in the past two weeks with representatives of the RTV Slovenija journalists and management, with almost all remarks and concerns voiced by the journalists taken into account.
