Rupel Expresses Slovenia's Unwavering Support for Montenegro
Slovenia will continue to support Montenegro on its path towards a new future, regardless of what this path may be like, Slovenian FM Dimitrij Rupel, who is currently also OSCE chairman, said on Tuesday as he came out of meetings with the Montenegrin leadership.
A referendum on the independence of Montenegro, and relations between Serbia and Montenegro in general were discussed with Montenegro's top officials, Rupel pointed out.
He stressed that a consensus should be reached on the most important decisions concerning Serbia-Montenegro, and added that this was "a stance of both him and the OSCE".
According to Rupel, relations between Serbia-Montenegro and Slovenia "will continue to be constructive and very good regardless of political developments between Serbia and Montenegro".
Rupel moreover believes that Montenegro's prospects to join the EU should not be pegged to the issue of its status.
Another topic discussed with Montenegrin official was the importance of stability for the region, where the OSCE is active within its mandate, chiefly helping reform the police force and in the field of human and minority rights.
Montenegro FM Miodrag Vlahovic, who labelled Rupel a good friend of Montenegro's, meanwhile called for upgrading Slovenia-Montenegro cooperation, and expressed an interest in cooperation with the OSCE.
The OSCE chairman also met President Filip Vujanovic, PM Milo Djukanovic, Speaker Ranko Krivokapic, the opposition leader Predrag Bulatovic and representatives of NGOs.
Rupel arrived in Podgorica from Belgrade, where he met several Serb officials on Monday. He has visited Serbia-Montenegro twice over the past two months as OSCE chairman.
