Three Books by Noam Chomsky to Be Published

Ljubljana, 18 March

Internationally acclaimed political activist, writer and linguistics professor Noam Chomsky is to visit Ljubljana on 29 March to deliver a lecture at the Cankarjev dom art centre. In view of his visit, the publisher Sanje plans to issue three of his books this year: "9-11" and "Profit over People" on the day of his visit, and "Hegemony or Survival" in autumn.

Chomsky, born in 1928, got a PhD in linguistics and began to work at the Institute of Technology Massachusetts in 1955, where he is still employed at the department of linguistics and philosophy.
In 1967, he published an essay entitled "The Responsibility of Intellectuals" and became one of the leading opponents of the war in Vietnam.
Since then, Chomsky has become recognisable all over the world by his persistent political activism, marked by lucid criticism of the US foreign policy, mass media analysis, analysis of international relations and defence of human rights, said the publisher Sanje in a press release.
Chomsky has published over 80 books and over a thousand discussions from the field of linguistics, philosophy, cognitive science and psychology. Apart from a few interviews and four articles, only two monographs have been published in Slovenian so far: "Knowledge of Language: Its Nature, Origin and Use" and "Deterring Democracy".
In the book "9-11", which has already been translated into 24 languages, Chomsky among other things points at the dilemma of the human race about whether our main task should be to compete for global dominance or to strive for the preservation of humanity. This topic is also the main scope of his latest book "Hegemony or Survival".
In "Profit over People", Chomsky stresses that the markets are never competitive. Most of the economy is dominated by mighty corporations with enormous control over their markets. According to Chomsky, corporations are totalitarian organisations that use non-democratic mechanisms.
